Winter Riding Tips From Don Mann!
Do you put your bike away for the winter or do you keep it handy just in case a winter ride is an option. We know how unpredictable our weather is in Calgary, I remember going for a bike ride on Boxing Day a few years ago. Not for everyone but if you do consider that cold weather ride there are some things to consider.
1. Lubrication -
Keep your chain clean & lube with a
"wet lube" rather than the summer "dry lube".
2. Brake pads -
Whether rim brakes or disc brakes make sure those pads
are sufficient for wet conditions.
3. Shoe covers -
These are wonderful to pull over your shoes
to keep your feet warm in winter conditions.
4. Warm gloves -
Warm hands make winter cycling a lot more bearable and
important to stay safe with shifting and brake operation.
5. Tires -
A great addition is a knobby tire or better yet, studded tires.
These tires could be wider & puncture resistant than your summer tires.
6. Lights -
With shorter days it is nice to add some front & rear lighting.
There are some great systems available for bicycles.
7. Fenders -
Keep your front and back dry with fenders to prevent
the wet debris that will be spraying off of your tires.
These are a few ideas to consider.
Add to the list if you have others that will keep a winter ride an option.
